Why an Enrolled Agent

Circular 230

The standard that governs every return we prepare.

Circular 230 (31 C.F.R. Part 10) is the Treasury regulation that defines the professional conduct of every Enrolled Agent, CPA, and attorney admitted to practice before the IRS — covering due diligence, conflicts of interest, fee rules, and the standards for written tax advice.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Answers to the questions clients most often ask before their first engagement.

What is an Enrolled Agent (EA)?

An Enrolled Agent is a federally licensed tax practitioner authorized by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service. EA status is earned by passing the IRS Special Enrollment Examination and is maintained through continuing education requirements under Circular 230.

How is an Enrolled Agent different from a CPA or general tax preparer?

An Enrolled Agent holds a federal license granted specifically for tax practice, with unlimited rights to represent any taxpayer before any IRS office — including audits, collections, and appeals. A general tax preparer with only a PTIN has no representation rights. CPAs and attorneys also have unlimited rights, but the EA credential is exclusively focused on federal tax law.

Do you serve clients outside of Hyannis and Cape Cod?

Yes. Because Enrolled Agents hold federal licenses, representation and advisory services can be provided to taxpayers in all 50 states. Many clients outside Cape Cod work with us through the secure Client Portal for document exchange and remote consultations.

What are your fees for tax preparation?

Individual tax returns start at $150 for simple federal returns and increase with complexity. Business returns, international filings, and representation work are separately priced. All fees are disclosed in writing before any work begins, in compliance with Circular 230 §10.27. See the full fee schedule.

What should I do if I receive an IRS notice?

Do not ignore it. IRS notices are time-sensitive — most require a response within 30 to 60 days. Call (508) 258-9890 or upload the notice through the Client Portal. We can pull your IRS transcript, review the matter, and respond on your behalf using Form 2848 Power of Attorney.

Can you handle FBAR and international tax filings?

Yes. Services include expat returns (Form 1040 with foreign income exclusions), FinCEN 114 (FBAR), FATCA disclosures (Form 8938), streamlined filing compliance procedures for late filers, and ITIN applications. See International Taxation for the full scope.

How do I get started as a new client?

Submit the consultation request form or call (508) 258-9890. After an initial conversation, you will receive a written engagement letter outlining the scope of work and fees before any return is prepared or any representation work begins.

Is my tax information kept confidential?

Yes. All client tax information is protected by IRC §7216, which prohibits disclosure or use of return information without written client consent. Document exchange is handled through the encrypted Client Portal, and all firm practices are governed by Circular 230 confidentiality standards.
